Chapter 2: My First Work in the Field

Climate-Smart Coffee Series                            Chapter 2: My First Work in the Field When I officially joined the Climate-Smart Coffee Project, it didn’t start in an office or a meeting room. It started on the road — moving from village to village, walking through coffee farms, and learning from farmers directly. Our first major task was collaborating with the international IDH survey, conducted with Sattva Consultancy, Bangalore. On 16th November, we had an orientation session at the Deepthigiri Dairy Milk Society, led by the project coordinator of Sattva Pragathi along with team members Aabita and Debraj.  Their guidance made the first day smooth and insightful.   Along wi th us were the MSW students — Benhar, Unais, Gauri Nandana, M...

Coffee Dreams and Future Plans

                                       Welcome to Chapter 16

Where Wayanad’s beans meet hope, youth, and innovation.

A Generation That’s Looking Ahead

Wayanad’s coffee fields have always held stories — of tradition, of labor, of flavor.

But now, they’re also becoming fields of possibility.

Even as the climate shifts and market prices wobble, the people here are dreaming bigger.

From smarter farming to stronger communities, the future is quietly being written, row by row.

 1. Youth Returning to Coffee

There was a time when younger generations stepped away from farming. But things are changing.

  • Today, many are returning with:
  • New perspectives on processing and marketing
  • A desire for organic and specialty coffee
  • Interest in entrepreneurship and coffee tourism
  • Curiosity about sustainability and value addition

Workshops, farmer trainings, and mobile tools are bridging tradition with technology.

“We don’t just want to grow coffee — we want to understand it.”

— Ranjith, 24, from Kalpetta

 2. Homegrown Branding and Specialty Markets

Many farmers and small collectives are beginning to create their own coffee brands — roasted, ground, and packed right here in Wayanad.

  • They’re exploring:
  • Direct-to-consumer sales
  • Local cafes and farmer-led outlets
  • Participation in events like Flavour of India – The Fine Cup
  • Online platforms for traceable origin stories

This is not just farming — it’s value creation, and it’s growing.

 3. Cooperatives and Knowledge Sharing

Smallholders are realizing they’re stronger together.

With more:

  • Community-led nurseries
  • Joint processing units
  • SHGs and farmer field schools
  • Shared access to equipment and training

This collaborative energy is what could lead Wayanad to scale up responsibly.

 A New Language: Sustainability

Future planning here doesn’t mean abandoning the past.

It means rethinking how we protect what we love.

The future of Wayanad coffee lies in:

  • Agroforestry
  • Climate awareness
  • Soil-first thinking

Eco-certifications and traceable sourcing

Farmers here are planting trees not just for shade — but for their grandchildren’s harvests.
